The Five Dysfunctions of a Team:  A Leadership Fable

Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions that go to the very heart of why teams – even the best ones – often struggle.  He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build a cohesive effective team.  This is a must read for any team leader!

First Break All the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently

By Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman

This book gives wonderful insights on human nature – talents, skills and knowledge – the fundamental building blocks.  Buckingham encourages you to revisit your management style to gain better performance from your team.  After reading it, I bought a copy for all of my direct reports.

Now, Discover Your Strengths

If you are committed to your growth and development, this book will be ideal for you.  It will provide you an opportunity to identify your talents and build them into strengths.  Each copy of this book provides a unique identification number that allows you access to the StrengthsFinder Profile on the internet.  This web-based interview analyzes your instinctive reactions and immediately presents you with your five most powerful signature talent themes.  Knowing and using your talents effectively will enhance both your professional and personal life.

Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman

 By Gail Evans

This is a practical, honest, often humorous playbook for career success that every woman (and men) should read.   You will find yourself seeing the situations discussed playing out before you in your own work environment.

Think and Grow Rich

          By Napoleon Hill

This book was first published in 1937.  It has been read by millions of people.  If you have already read it, read it again or share it with someone.

The book was inspired by Andrew Carnegie, who disclosed his formula of personal achievement to Napoleon Hill.  Think and Grow Rich is part what-to-do and how-to-do-it book.  In it you will find the magic of self direction, organized planning, autosuggestion, and master mind association.  I think this book is so important that I'm listing it under both business and self help.  Judging by the number of recent reviews of this book on Amazon.com, it's still widely read and appreciated.

The Power of Full Engagement  by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz

This book was recommended to me, but it wasn’t until I read in the introduction ‘that the number of hours in a day is fixed, but the quality of energy available to us is not’ that I knew I had to read this book.   Jim and Tony suggest that managing energy, not time, is the key to high performance and personal renewal.  If you, like so many others, are searching for more balance in your life, this is a great book for you.  I found it to be a highly practical approach to managing your energy more skillfully both on and off the job.

Strengths Finder 2.0

            By Tom Rath

This is a follow-up book to Now, Discover Your Strengths previously presented on the Bookshelf.  The on-line assessment has been updated by the Gallop Organization as well as the reporting.  The most significant addition to the reports is the “Ideas for Action” section at the end of each of your top five strengths.  I can’t emphasize enough the need to get in touch with your strengths to enhance your personal and professional life.

SELF HELP

The  Best Year of Your Life – Dream It, Plan It, Live It

This book is a practical blueprint for making today the beginning of the best year of your life.  It is a call to action.  It helps you realize the life of your dreams will not magically arrive.  Instead, it helps you make a clear and precise plan of action that helps deliver the life you’ve been waiting for.

Lighten Up!  Free Yourself from Clutter

          By Michelle Passoff

This book is wonderful.  It certainly changed my life by helping me address my stuff.  You will learn how to do away with piles of paper, find courage to toss out clothes you never wear, distinguish memorabilia from junk and much more.

Romancing the Ordinary – A Year of Simple Splendor

          By Sarah Ban Breathnach

This book is written like a journal, starting in January.  Each chapter is filled with wisdom, witty humor and examples of ways in which we can all make each ‘ordinary’ day wondrous.  This is one of my favorite books.  It sits in my bedroom allowing me to reread the chapters as each new month approaches.

Women Who Think Too Much

          By Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, PH.D

Many of you will see your own behaviors in the stories that Susan shares with us.  Does your career have you thinking and rethinking the choices you’ve made?   Do you keep yourself awake at night trying to anticipate anything and everything?  Do you have trouble getting over losses and setbacks?  If any of this rings a bell, this book is for you.

Smart Women Finish Rich

            By David Bach

Finally a book for women that talks about money in a way that makes sense.  It is like a private motivational seminar.  The short case studies are easy to follow – you may even see yourself in them.  David outlines seven very logical steps that provide you a road map to secure your financial future. Whether you’re working with a few dollars a week, a significant inheritance, or a savings account that’s been earning just 3%, the Smart Women Finish Rich approach toward saving and investing can provide a huge payoff.

The Mature Mind – The Positive Power of the Aging Brain

            By Gene D. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D.

When I first selected this book, it was to learn to be a better support to my aging mother.  What ultimately happened is that Gene Cohen was able to inspire me to understand that aging can be a time of growth, creativity and emotional fulfillment.  Not only am I excited about my mother’s future, but also I now realize there is plenty of time for me to reach new potentials while continuing to grow as an individual.  As a retirement coach, I couldn’t recommend a better book for those approaching this new phase of their life.
